The Broad : Unprivate collection John Ahearn + Rigoberto Torres + Joe Lewis

I love art history, especially stories which aren’t as widely known.

Small things can make a era fascinating, I guess what makes the Rigoberto Torres

casting the community extremely interesting is it broke the mold (bad pun use) of

what creativity should be and how it should interact with the community.

It’s always refreshing to see someone boldly execute a project and be successful.

It really seems like a beautiful project of inclusion, where kids

who are not normally elevated creatively and celebrated are brought together

with a lot of respect. I would have really like to have witnessed in real life the process and

interest of the children watching. I love kids.

1980’s New York is one of my favorite art eras. Fashion Moda seemed like an amazing space, I would have loved to visit it when it existed.

Tm Gratkowski At Walter Maciel Gallery

Tm Gratkowski will be on view at the Walter Maciel Gallery in the Culver City Arts District until October 29. This is Tm's first show in two years and his work has really evolved since his last show.
The installation above is based off prohibited words in school among middle school students. Each tag hung corresponds to the framed words which were in the same room. I really loved the way it was lit.

Raw Materials Art Store

There's a really good art supply store in Downtown LA. I was hesitant to go in there cause I thought the people working there would be hipsters with an attitude and the prices would be high. But it's the complete opposite. And they have this adorable dog Wonton, the owner's wife does all these cute paintings of him. I guess the business must be good because there's suppose to be tons of artists who have studios in the area.

The Broad

I thought The Broad would be bigger, it was surprisingly small. And it didn't feel vast. Eli Broad is among the top 3 art collectors in the world and it felt like a thin contemporary art survey book. I have a lot of respect for him and how he's trying to turn Los Angeles into an art city, but honestly I was a little let down by the collection, the architecture was amazing though.

Instagram

Instagram has helped me more than I thought it would. I've been trying to paint in a looser style and inspiration and looking at other art is important. I think it helps me more than going to galleries all the time. But going to galleries helped me develop a better sense of color. It's also nice way to put yourself out there without having to deal with anxiety because I have an anonymous page. It just helps in a lot of ways because it's a supportive environment, and there's a motivating factor.
